| Description | Eight "shoes" and one 8-foot iron and steel "doughnut" make up a thrust bearing for one of the big generating sets at the Grand Coulee powerhouse. Weeks of machine work and polishing are put into making the thrust runner, the face of which must be as nearly a true plane as men and machines can make it, for it must distribute over the eight shoes the 900-ton load of the rotating parts of the generator and turbine. Final hand scraping, on the job, is necessary to remove from the babbited faces...
