Title | Steel Closure Gate |
Description | All-steel closure gates in place at spillway diversion channels Nos. 34, 36, and 38. The gates were placed on the upstream side of the dam only; the bottoms of the diversion channels were above the tailwater elevations, consequently gates were not required on the downstream side of the dam. However, on a few occasions, the tailwater surface was high enough to cause some backwash in the gaps. Timber bulkheads and sand bags were then used. Engineers designed these huge closure gates to block sections of the diversion trenches for concrete pours that built the Grand Coulee Dam one channel at a time. |
