Steel Closure Gate

Washington State University Libraries

Field Value
Title Steel Closure Gate
Description A closure gate moves slowly into position. When rollers of the gate are placed against the roller path guide frame (the truss of which is visible); the derrick will lower the gate, thereby cutting off the river flow through this diversion channel. The low gap can then be filled with concrete. Engineers designed these huge closure gates to block sections of the diversion trenches for concrete pours that built the Grand Coulee Dam one channel at a time.
