Field Value
Title Grand Coulee Cofferdam Layout
Description Department of the Interior: Bureau of Reclamation; Columbia Basin Project, Wash. Grand Coulee Dam Cofferdam Layout During the early part of 1937 the cross-river cofferdam was completed here based on the assumption that it would have to handle 550,000 c.f.s of water for the diversion of the Columbia River for the entire year. The elevation 910 channels were below normal water elevations, so they had to be closed at both ends to be unwatered. The contractors constructed 4 huge wooden closure gates weighing close to 150 tons to block the flow of the Columbia from entering the channels.
