Description | Collapsing of cell 3 of steel cluster "G" at time of cofferdam leak, March 18, 1937. Contractor's field office burning after falling down from top of cell after collapse. On March 17, 1937, a leak developed near the extreme west end of the downstream cross-river cofferdam, known as cell cluster "G. Increasing within a couple of days to over 30,000 gallons per minute within a few days. This flow undermined the cofferdam cell and caused it to collapse, though quick action by the contractor prevented disastrous delays in construction. |
