Block Cooling Shaft

Washington State University Libraries

Field Value
Title Block Cooling Shaft
Description Thirty-six inch cooling shaft in center of a block being prepared for a pour. Shown here is the exit of a thirty-six inch cooling shaft that was an integral part of the dam construction. A constant flow of water was maintained throughout the structure of the dam using pipes like these to ensure proper temperature. This innovation would allow concrete to maintain optimal temperatures to prevent warping, cracking, or general weakening of the structural integrity of the concrete.
