| Description | Ice-dam gorge. Excavation down to elevation 761. Frozen dam to the left. This Image shows the depth and enormity of the "Ice Dam. To construct the ice dam engineers placed a 1-1/2 inch pipe inside a 3-inch pipe and connected Freezing points through a series of rubber hoses. Two ammonia-brine refrigerating units with a combined capacity of 80 tons of ice per day began operating in August 24, 1936 to maintain the dam temperature at zero degrees Fahrenheit.
