Description | 1 map; 19 x 25 cm. In 1852, James G. Swan was invited to come visit Shoalwater Bay, now known as Willapa Bay, in the Washington territory. Swan spent several years there, engaging in the oyster business. In 1856 he went to the nation's capital as a private secretary to Congressman Isaac Stevens, and there found time to write the book that this map is found in. Swan returned to the northwest in 1858, and was one of the major figures in the early history of Port Townsend. |
