Pierre John DeSmet, established a mission with the Flathead Indians of the Bitterroot Valley near present day Missoula, Montana on September 24, 1841. Having gained the respect and friendship of many neighboring tribes, in 1845 DeSmet confidently set out on a mission of peace to act as mediator between the Flatheads and their traditional foe, the Blackfoot Nation (located further east in Montana). Format Original maps were scanned in color at 600 dpi on a Microtek 9600XL scanner and saved as TIFF files. The TIFF files were converted into the MrSID format at a compression ratio of 12 to 1 using LizardTech's Geospatial Encoder 1.4 software. These MrSid files were then uploaded into the CONTENTdm database at the Washington State University Libraries. image/jpeg
