Description As the cutting edge of the graving dock caisson came to rest on higher projecting points of bedrock smaller caissons, consisting of precast concrete rings, were sunk to bedrock around the inside edge of the large caisson. After these were filled with concrete and capped the points of rock supporting the cutting edge were blasted away, thus allowing the graving dock caisson to continue to settle downward as excavation continued, until it came to rest supported by similar concrete pillars....
