Description Grand Coulee Dam is of the straight-gravity type, depending entirely upon the weight of the structure to resist the pressure of the water behind it, tending to overturn it or cause it to slide on its base. The river canyon was too wide for a dam of the arch type. From elevation 1023.1 downward the upstream face of the dam slopes outward on a 0.15 slope, intersecting as a tangent the curved toe of 20 foot radius rising from bedrock. The downstream face of the dam rises on an 0.8 to 1 slope....
