Title | Little Dalles, Lower End |
Description | This is a view of the lower end of the Little Dalles rapids, showing its narrow channel, only 200 feet wide, in comparison to the river farther downstream. Here in the Dalles the water was more than 200 feet deep. This mad rush of swirling water was a considerable hazard to early travelers on the river, the big whirlpool developing in the center of the picture downstream from the rock island being especially feared. About 1850 a small steamer, the "49" used to run this narrow, twisting... Image of Kettle Falls before being inundated by the rising waters of the Columbia River building behind the Grand Coulee Dam. Engineers appear to be conducting surveying operations in the Kettle Falls area. |
