Description | Here, early in the spring of 1934, the Western Construction Company is starting excavation for the west pier of the highway bridge, with a clamshell bucket working behind a wooden cofferdam. In the foreground is a similar arrangement for the east pier (#2)" On Sept.. 14, 1933 a transfer of $1,000,000 from the funds of the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation was secured for the purpose of constructing this bridge and the government town site.... The Western Construction Co. built the foundation piers for the highway bridge beginning on August 22, 1934, while the J. H. Pomeroy Co. built the bridge superstructure later. The bridge opened to traffic on January 27. 1936 and is the only bridge still remaining of the nine that spanned the Columbia River during the project. |
