| Description | It was a hundred miles to the nearest city. People had to take a semblance of society with them to the dam site. This took the usual ephemeral form of a frontier village, yet contained all the paradoxes of the more complex civilization beyond the waste lands. Every element " good, bad and indifferent, came in quest of a livelihood; creating conditions akin to those which accompanied the first appearances of organized society in the vast area west of the Mississippi River. Nothing existed... Here is old "B" street, once famous for its free and unbridled life. Most of the dance halls, beer parlors, and night spots were located on this street. The dusty roads, lawlessness, and lack of public infrastructure combined in Grand Coulee and the other construction towns to form frontier towns similar to those found in the Old West.
