Battery of Grout Pumps

Washington State University Libraries

Field Value
Title Battery of Grout Pumps
Description This is a battery of grout pumps working outside during the spring of 1939. Grout is a very thin mixture of neat cement and water. It is forced under great pressure into other intersticed rock crevices and seams thru grout holes drilled into the bedrock, thus sealing off any leakage and rendering the mass monolithic. Before grouting these holes are washed free of any clay, or other washable material, by means of alternate jets of air and water, and then tested with clean water under... After the concrete had cooled and shrunk to its final shape workers grouted the contraction joints between the blocks. Each joint measured roughly 3/32 of an inch and 19,480 barrels of bulk cement were used to grout the contraction joints. (Clifford R. Koester. A History of the Columbia Basin Project vol. II, 168-9)
