Title | East Abutment Demolition |
Description | In April of 1938 drilling and blasting of rock on the upper part of the east abutment was started. From these abutment areas workmen drilled, blasted, and barred down thousands of tons of weathered and loose rock. Excavation of the rock for the foundation of the dam, powerhouses, and pumping plant to be completed under the CBI contract was bid at $3.75 per cubic yard. When completed, the top of the dam extended to about the level of the top of the pine tree in the left foreground. The... Work in January, 1936 concentrated on the East Abutment where engineers removed five times as much rock as they had on the west bank. Workers removed 75 feet of rock to level the surface for construction of the right power house, whereas on the West bank they had to build a foundation for the power house. |
