Title | Frozen Earth Dam |
Description | This view of the downstream face of the frozen earth dam shows how it closed the mouth of the deep crevice in the east side bedrock, and blocked further movement of the clay slope which persisted in flowing into the construction area. Three miles of 1 1\2" pipe placed inside the same amount of 3" pipe allowed construction engineers to circulate brine at zero degrees to freeze the moving earth. Engineers placed 377 freezing points 2 1/2 ft. apart, each had a 1 1/4" freezing radius, to form an arch dam 110 feet long, 45 feet deep, and 20 feet thick. (Clifford R. Koester.
