Title | Failure of Concrete and Timber Bulkhead |
Description | In the background can be seen a concrete and timber bulkhead constructed across the upstream end of an east side crevice to prevent the material in the forebay from sliding into the pit. This device proved to be ineffectual in stopping the great mass of unstable earth. Using a method invented by F. H. Poetsch of Prussia for sinking deep shafts without timbering, a 3,000 cubic yard dam was frozen in this clay at a cost of approximately $30,000. At the time the freezing started the clay mass... The Ice Dam was the largest of its kind constructed thus far, though it was not an idea that originated with the construction engineers. |
