| Description | This leak in the downstream corner of the east side cofferdam in March, 1937 threatened to flood the east side excavation area. A crisis was reached on March 19, 1937 when a vortex developed on the river side of the downstream cell cluster, and the leak reached a rate of 35,000 gallons per minute. In addition to the menace of the in-rushing waters, failure of the cofferdam cells was imminent. Cells settled out of plumb, and internal pressures so great that rivet heads popped off of a row... On night of March 17, 1937 the extreme west end of the downstream cofferdam sprung a leak. This leak was eventually brought under control by April 23, 1937, with 150,000 lbs. of Bentonite, 1,250,000 pounds of cement, 4,700 cubic feet of sawdust and 7,000 cubic feed of wood shavings. |
