Title | Whirley Cranes |
Description | A winter scene from the platform of the CBI trestle, showing the various cranes. On the flat car in the foreground is an outlet tube gate shell. 20 Diesel-electric trains operating on the trestle carried buckets, each containing 4 cubic yards of concrete, from the mixing plant to points on the trestle where needed, and these giant cranes lowered them to the forms. The white Whirley Crane in the foreground was larger than standard size, as it had special silicon steel alloy booms. It weighed 120 tons and had a hoist speed of 170 feet per minute. It was powered by three motors totaling 280 horsepower. It could lift 10 tons at a 20 degree angle and 40 tons at a 45 degree angle. It could also rotate on a 360 degree axis and lift from 15 degrees to 75 degree angles. |
