Title Field Engineers
Description In spite of the enormous amount of tedious and exacting work they performed, as well as the utter dependence of all operations on the lines and elevations established by them, the field engineers and survey parties received relatively little recognition from the general public. No chronologer rose from their ranks to tell of their work. The story of their part in the job lies in the musty files of their note books, but they may rest content in the knowledge that it was from their lines and... The large number of required surveys and the required high degree of accuracy demanded a scheme of horizontal and vertical geodetic control. Thus the head of Field Engineering, Mr. A. F. Darland, demanded that all calculations be made with at least two independent calculations to derive a ratio of field error to calculate into the schematics of the Grand Coulee Dam. This ratio was limited to no less than 1:5000 for reservoir calculations and 1:25000 for precise dam construction. (Clifford R....
