Title | Dismantling Low Suspension Bridge |
Description | In some ways the dismantling of the suspension bridge was a greater problem than its erection. In this scene the upper section of the center tower has just been toppled to the ground for removal. The island of piling cells upon which the center tower stood remained a difficult problem. Most of it was removed by CBI in 1938 on E.W.O. #5, but still more of it had to be removed by the U.S.B.R. during channel dredging operations in 1945-1946 Riggers began to dismantle the bridge on March 15, 1938 and CBI officially took contract to dismantle bridge on March 22, 1938. Though awarded a contract for $10,000 to dismantle the bridge, it cost nearly double that before the bridge was completely removed. |
