Title | Brett Gravel Pit |
Description | A part of the Brett Gravel Pit as it appeared in April of 1940. Buggies, drawn by tractors are supplementing the lateral conveyors in moving material to the main belt which is seen here discharging into the raw stockpile. About 75% of the gravel deposit consisted of hard, dense basalt, and 10% granite, with small percentages of other rocks making up the remainder. The government furnished the raw aggregate material, and the contractors processed and delivered it to the mixing plant as part... The sand ratio for the concrete mix for the Grand Coulee construction project was stipulated at 28%, however Brett pit had a much higher ratio of 65% sand. This led to 3,000,000 cubic yards of spoil being rejected while constructing the base and more than ten million yards wasted upon completion of the dam. (Clifford R. Koester.
