Description | Here in April of 1937 jackhammer crews are removing the first layer of bedrock in the excavation pit east of block 40. Note the vertical keyways on the side of block 40, which was typical of all blocks. The blocks were interlocked with these vertical keys along transverse joints, and with horizontal keys at longitudinal joints. The keyways were 16 inches deep, and on 3 foot centers.
