| Description | Coalpit Gulch takes its name from the period when coal or charcoal was used to smelt metal. Men would log and burn timber to create charcoal. This was unacceptable to many, as timber in the canyon was desperately needed to shore up the mines. Eventually, a railroad spur to the canyon brought coal for the smelters. |
