Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; DIKING alternative INSECT PESTS AND VECTORS provo bay dike plans mosquito poduction production po duction in provo bay following diking I 1 111 III ili IV and V will depend upon the designated use and management of lands behind the dike marsh development would reduce production agricultural use with good water management would reduce numbers with poor management would increase numbers of flood water species industrial and urban development would reduce total numbers produced of most species but more people would be exposed to the bites of those present presenting an increased opportunity for disease transmission deer and horse flies would be reduced in numbers with each proposed development plan under proper water management practices with industrial and urban developments more people would be exposed to bites increasing the chance of tularemia biting gnats are not a problem and should not be a problem with the bay diked biked brine flies are not a problem and should not be a problem with the bay diked biked goshen bay DPR I 1 II 11 & V mosquito production will increase dramatically due to extreme and frequent water level changes and reduced water quality increase in area of saltcedar salt cedar and saltgrass salt grass will result in increased mosquito production and reduced mosquito control ef effectiveness f ectivenes s deer and horse flies will become more numerous in areas of fluctuating water levels where saltcedar salt cedar and saltgrass salt grass become established control will be very difficult in such a large area biting gnats could become very numerous in sandy areas that are periodically flooded and exposed by fluctuating water levels especially as the water becomes more salty control is very hard due to the large breeding areas S 14
