Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; ground in the soldier creek arm would be inundated by the reservoir enlargement the other which is located between road and badger hollows in the soldier creekarm Cree creek karm arm of the enlargement may remain intact spring counts of male birds on these two sites have ranged from 52 to 201 birds since 1970 9 this heavy use indicates that these strutting grounds are supporting a significant population of birds nesting occurs throughout the study area and adjacent sagebrush habitat two important winter ing areas are currently being inundated by the reservoir another wintering area is located on private land within the study area figure 11 mallard teal widgeon and pintail ducks utilize the impoundments and tributaries tributa ries during the spring summer and fall months nesting occurs along tributaries tributa ries and reservoir shoreline canada geese are often observed in and around the reservoir and greater sandhill cranes nest in several locations the perimeter of the reservoir also provides suitable habitat for aquatic birds such as swans and coots the study area supports many species of nongame birds and animals as indicated in attachment 1 in two trips to the reservoir area behle and perry 1975 observed 57 species during early spring 10 raptors raptores known to use the area include the red tailed hawk Swain swainsons swainsons1 swainsona sons hawk golden eagle marsh hawk great horned owl and sparrow hawk the common loon eared grebe western grebe great blue heron snowy egret and many other species are found closely associated with shoreline habitat mammals include the coyote badger uinta ground squirrel white tailed jackrab bit and striped skunk deer mice voles pocket gophers and chipmunks are common beaver mink and muskrat are fur bearing species inhabiting portions of the impoundments and the tributaries tributa ries if the proposed action is not implemented the condition of the wildlife resource in and around the reservoir enlargement would probably continue to deteriorate inundation of habitat and the attraction of recreation ists ests and related developments to the reservoir are the prime adverse factors affecting wildlife c endangered species 1 fisli fish based upon the review of available data and consultation with resource management agencies it has been determined that no species of fish listed under the endangered species act PL 93 205 inhabit the reservoir or its tributaries tributa ries the bureau of reclamation entered into formal consultation under section 7 of the endangered species act with the US fish and wildlife service for the bonneville unit in october 1977 consultation is ongoing A january 1978 threshold examination by the service indicated that the unit may jeopardize the continued existence of colorado squawfish and humpback chub both federally listed species the concern relates to the duchesne and green rivers and not the strawberry reservoir area 2 wildlife based on examination of available data and consultation with resource management agencies it has been determined that the range of two 48
