Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; irrigation AND DRAINAGE SYSTEM utah lake diking this is one of the most controversial phases of the bonneville unit diking provo bay would be particularly damaging to terrestrial and aquatic wildlife there has been a longstanding long standing proposal to develop a wildlife management area in goshen bay as mitigation for diking impacts on wetlands and related wildlife values no water has yet been committed to that management area withoutadequate without adequate water this is not a viable mitigation alternative there is strong opposition from conservation organizations to diking provo bay diking provo bay would simply replace critically valued wetlands with croplands crop lands andor municipal and industrial development project sponsors have indicated in meetings with the state review team that provo bay diking is not imperative to project purposes protection of the june sucker is another critical issue that must be resolved in future planning this species has been proposed for listing as an endangered species the state of utah supports that listing and has encouraged the U S department of interior to expedite implementation of a recovery plan A june sucker management plan has been prepared by the state division of wildlife resources that suggests alternative lake management strategies that will benefit this species canal and drainage systems the most significant impact of the canal system that would convey water south to juab county and sevier bridge reservoir is obstruction of big game movements and migration and wildlife losses tosses by drowning A combination of underground piping fencing and intermittent crossing structures will be 120
