Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; 7 general conditions a climate average annual precipitation for the strawberry reservoir area approxi mates 20 inches of which about 25 percent falls as rain the growing season which usually begins in late may or early june lasts for 90100 90 100 days air temperatures during the winter reach an average minimum of 4 80 8 F and maximum summer temperatures approach the 90 F level prevailing winds are from the southwest b geology and landforms Land forms the elevation of the present strawberry reservoir is approximately 7575 feet above sea level land around the reservoir consists of a gently rolling basin having low relief and gradient underlying materials consist of quaternary alluvium in the valley bottom tertiary uinta formation in the major portion of the surrounding slopes and tertiary green river formation mainly along the narrow canyon area connecting strawberry reservoir with soldier creek impoundment there are potential rockfall and slide areas located along the steep canyon connecting the two impoundments As the enlarged reservoir fills some earth movement to achieve equilibrium of the inundated land may occur resulting in landslides and slumps slumping clumping Slum ping of land into the reservoir may also occur in other shoreline areas there are two principal zones of potential seismic activity in the area of the enlarged reservoir the strawberry fault extends north to south along the east shore of the main body of the reservoir while the stink ing springs fault extends along eastern boundary of the soldier creek arm of the reservoir there have been a few earthquakes of minor in tensity reported for these areas 30 this activity indicates that the region has potential for instability the latest activity recorded was in october 1957 and july 1963 this aspect was taken into consideration in the design and construction of soldier creek dam and has been incorporated into the proposed plan c soil slope and erosion potential the main soil type found within the proposed recreation management boundary is a mixture of loamy sand sandy loam and loam most of the proposed campgrounds and day use sites are located on this kind of soil silt and clay loam areas are scattered throughout the proposed recreation management area and west shore recreation site and small portions of other potential development sites are on soil of this type heavier mixtures of clay materials occur in small localized areas on the northern end of the reservoir and on the east side of strawberry impoundment there are essentially no recreation facilities proposed for these soils 54
