Relation | Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; CHAPTER I 1 GENERAL GEVERAL discussions the birth rate in utah has been consistently near the highest in the nation new economic opportunities have not always kept pace with the natural population increase however and many persons have been forced to move elsewhere for a livelihood from 1920 to 1940 the net outward migration was 70000 persons of whom 50000 were in the working period of life life ilfe live ages 20 to 61 61. gl 64 despite outa outw outward tard rard migration utah utahs utah1s s birth rate has been sufficient to produce a population gain in each decade the migratory trend has been reversed since 1940 important industrial advances stimulated by world war II 11 and since continuing on a permanent basis have brought many people into the state particularly into the central utah project area industrial development local industry agriculture is the basic industry throughout the project area except in the salt lake city provo vicinity where miningsmeltingand mining sm elting eiting and manufacturing are of greatest importance economically livestock raising is the principal agricultural pursuit A favorable base exists for the livestock operations as feed crops are extensively produced on irrigated lands and vast range ranae ranee resources are available on nearby mountains and plains although feed crops are principally produced diversified crops are grown in parts of the project area particularly in the bonneville basin where all climatically adapted crops are successfully produced in recent years utah has frequently led all other states in the total value of gold silver copper leadand lealand lead and zinc produced the largest open pit copper mine in north america is located in bingham canyon near salt lake city normal copper production of the west mountain bingham mining district is more than double that of any other district in the nation the district is also one of the nations leading producers of gold and is the states major source of silver lead and zinc ores from the west mountain district supplemented by other nonferrous ores from the nearby park city alta tintic gintic and tooele thoele areas and from some more remote locations are milled and smelted smelter in iff salt lake valley an electrolytic copper refinery has been constructed recently near salt lake city to produce finished copper for western markets iron and steel are produced near provo at the geneva and columbia plants the geneva plant which was constructed during world war II 11 is the largest fully integrated steel plant west of the mississippi river the areas manufacturing 0 enterprises are many and varied locally produced iron and steel are attracting satellite industries and refined copper is expected to bring other manufacturers to the area many plants 5 |
