Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; D UTAH LAKE INSECT PROBLEMS information derived from studies conducted in salt lake valley and utah valleys is used in this section because the same nuisance insects and related diseases are found in utah and salt lake valleys and environmental conditions are similar in both areas studies conducted in one area are applicable to the other MOSQUITO CONTROL IN UTAH COUNTY A survey of mosquito problems in central utah county was conducted by the zoology and entomology department of brigham young university from july 1 1958 through august 31 1959 the study was sponsored by and at the request of the utah county health department according to beck 1961 the objectives of the study were to determine the types of mosquitoes present the geographic distribution seasonal populations and general biology of each species vector potential for disease and the formulation of control recommendations during the three year period of 1960 through 1962 surveying and mapping of breeding sources in the county continued in addition to the operation of light traps following the passing of an informational ballot in the 1962 election funds were made available by the county commission for a mosquito control program to be initiated under the direction of the city county health department the control program continued through 1966 as part of the county health department at which time it was organized as a separate mosquito abatement department wright and marrott 1973 the mosquito control program has continued as a department of county government to the present beginning in 1980 the department received its funds from its own mill levy rather than from the county government fund nielsen and rees 1961 reported 40 species of mosquitoes representing 6 genera as occurring in utah in a survey of central utah county beck 1961 reported that 20 species representing 5 genera were 2 80
