Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; 1 NATIONAL N A I 1 ir oine OINA olne AL PARK SERVICE REPORT of the 5600 people residing in wasatch county only 478 47.8 478 47 47. percent are classified as urban heber the county seat and largest town in the county had a population of 2 274 748 748 .748 in 1940 with an estimated 3200 in 1947 according to the state of utah department of publicity and industrial development in an area of limited population most of which is rural and where other more attractive reservoirs will be nearby it is doubtful if more than 1500 people would visit the area during one season it would at least be wiser to plan development on this basis and enlarge later if indicated by public use and demand related areas existing and proposed existing reservoirs within the same use area include deer creek east canyon and echo which are primarily reservoirs without recreational development all three have to varying degree the possibility of recreational use if properly developed deer creek near wallsburg Walls burg is approximately 17 to 20 miles fran the bates site east canyon reservoir 9 miles below porterville is about 35 or 40 miles from bates and echo reservoir near the town of echo is sane seme sene 30 miles from bates deer creek and east canyon have more natural attraction than the echo reservoir but all three could provide the setting for attractive recreational developments although fishing at the echo reservoir at least is stated by fish and wildlife service representatives to offer very poor fishing forty miles or so south of the bates site is the existing strawberry reservoir on U S 40 between heber and fruitland froitland Fruit land while this reservoir has very little recreational development at present it is quite possible that such development could be realized in connection with the proposed enlargement recreational possibilities of this area have been covered in detail in the section of this report dealing with this reservoir estimate of recrealional recreational need and use it is apparent from the foregoing description that the recreational value for the population surrounding the bates reservoir will be fairly well restricted to day use and perhaps some camping there are other convenient areas which if developed and maintained in accordance with recommendations made in this report will provide more attractive vacation and weekend accommodations 0 while it is desirable to use the recreational opportunity provided by the proposed bates reservoir it is necessary to realize also the limitations of operation topography and general scenic attractions which may prevent this reservoir from assuming more than nominal recreational significance 46
