Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; knowns keowns as epiphytes these communities differ significantly from others in the littoral the nondiatom non diatom epiphytes reflect the nature of the planktonic flora to some extent as do all of the littoral communities this is due to aphanizomenon flos fios aguae aquae aglae and anabaena spiroides spi roides var crassa which filter down from the plankton and settle on the vascular plants however a variety of other species occur as true epiphytes several green and bluegreen blue green algae occur almost exclusively in this habitat likewise species of euglena common as epiphytes are less common elsewhere epiphytic diatom assemblages are quite similar during the summer months to the the epilithic epi lithic community for instance nitzschia inconspicua dominates both habitats during july however many of the other species attached to emergent vegetation are different enough to separate the total communities As the season progresses nitzschia inconspicua is dominated by achnanthes lachnanthes minutissima by november species of cymbella fragilaria cocconeis Cocco neis and others have increased in dominance over nitzschia inconspicua the standing crop of the epiphytic communities is significant often thick mats of algal growth are evident on emergent vegetation this biomass is used by insects and other animals and undoubtedly the emergent vegetation with its attached epiphytes represent an important component of the littoral zone of utah lake algae in cores and recent bottom sediments our studies of bottom sediment algae of utah lake have been of the diatom communities since the nondiatoms non diatoms occurring or deposited there are within a few weeks these studies have corroborated our findings from other studies the algal flora of utah lake is a diverse assemblage with pennate diatoms dominating in total number of species over centric species and nondiatoms non diatoms however centric diatoms dominate in standing crop over pennate species this is expected since centric 253 2 53
