Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; it should be stressed that the algal species occurring on the emergent plants are not found exclusively in the marsh habitat type that is the important species attached to emergent vegetation also occur on rocky substrates however the structures of the communities attached to emergent vegetation and rocky substrates are uniquely different from each other table 3c ac 301 1 lists the important diatom species occurring on the major habitat types found in the utah lake littoral to illustrate this point this table illustrates that many of the species overlap in occurrence on the separate habitat types but that the habitats tend to support distinctive floral assemblages this is further supported by a spearman rank correlation analysis of the important diatom species present on the separate habitat types in the littoral table 3c ac 2 this analysis supports the conclusion that the littoral habitats all support quite distinct habitat or algal community types for instance when the diatom communities attached to emergent vegetation are compared to those from other littoral habitats the floras are not significantly positively correlated with those occurring on any other habitat type this is significant since the floral types did not correlate significantly even when rare species were considered since many of the rare species in utah lake tend to be broad niched nichea organisms which occur in small numbers in a variety of different habitats when the rare species are compared across all substrate types the communities appear to be more similar in the spearman analysis even if the dominant species occur in quite different proportions in order to ascertain that the uniqueness of the algal floras attached to emergent vegetation were due to habitat type and not to position effect within the lake rubble was sampled in the emergent vegetation localities when the epiphytic diatom floras were compared to those attached to the rubble collected from the same locality by the spearman analysis there was no significant correlation between the two even when rare species were considered table 3c ac 2 357 3 57
