Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; receives about 17 of the total lake water inf inflow low but about 43 of the lakes total phosphorus loading and 39 of the inorganic nitrogen loading flow into it BOD loadings for provo bay are about 25 of the lakes total because of these heavy loadings and subsequent partial stabilization in provo bay fuhriam Fuhr iam et al 1975 suggested that the provo bay inflows might need treatment before being discharged directly to the lake since the lake is already hyper eutrophic in nutrient loadings and has a large BOD stabilization capacity the need and cost effectiveness of such treatment is questionable some additional algae growth stimulation would occur in the vicinity of the discharge with the enriched condition adding some additional preference for the less desirable blue green algae see discussion on page 349 3 49 the critical time for any impacts from the additional BOD loading would likely be in the winter beneath the winter ice cover where localized oxygen depletion might occur A significant part of the past BOD load in provo bay has now been removed with the completion of the new provo sewage treatment plant which has reduced effluent BOD from about 30mgl to less than 10 mgl mg1 mgt also during the winter months BOD from other sources is greatly reduced since biological growth and activity upstream is much less than in the summer and fall therefore it seems that the pollution impact of direct discharge of provo bay inflow waters to the main lake would be small this issue should be reviewed in the future for specific difficulties arising from final project plans water quality impacts resulting from proposed provo bay dike the water quality impacts from using a reclaimed provo bay for agricultural industrial or urban uses can not be addressed with any certainty at this time since such impacts are largely dependent on the kinds of developments within each category perhaps the best observation at this juncture is that additional water quality impacts should be no worse than those caused by current land uses of these types in the immediate area none of these existing impacts are seen as being of serious concern if existing pollution control requirements are followed since utah lake has a large assimilative capacity one should resist going 3 24
