Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; 45 converted to mormonism like earlier indian policies this too was a failure first the ute was a hunter and a gatherer not a farmer second the program drew strong objections from gentile indian officials in the territory third little financial support for the farms came from either young or the federal government failure of this program interference with the lucrative slave trade continued encrouchment encroachment on indian lands and mistreatment of the indian by the mormons cormons resulted in two indian wars the walker war 1852 1853 and the black hawk war 1864 1867 early in 1849 john wilson the newly appointed federal indian agent for the salt lake indian agency recommended to washington a complete separation of whites and indians in a letter to the secretary of the interior wilson put forth his proposal which included the establish ment of an indian reservation consisting of the green yampa and white river valleys in 1861 secretary of the interior caleb B smith resurrected wilsons vilsons Wil sons suggestion and in october 1861 president abraham lincoln issued an executive order creating the uintah indian reservation the newly created reservation encompassed the drainage of the duchesne river and all of its tributaries tributa ries an area of approximately 2487474 acres US government printing office 1868 the area east of the sand ridge ten miles east of present day fort duchesne is in the ashley creek and brush creek drainages and was excluded from the newly created reservation these drainages were left open for white settlement soon after lincolns Lincol ns executive order creating the uintah indian reservation a call was made by brigham young for church members to settle ashley valley recognizing that he might lose portions of eastern utah to gentile control young urged his people to settle the area early reports from the first company in the basin were discouraging cou raging high mountains with few all weather trails into the basin and the lack of large quantities of arable lands delayed settlement youngs acceptance of these reports is surprising in light of the other settlements which were being established in even less desirable areas of the territory following on the heels of lincolns Lincol ns executive order of 1861 0 H irish superintendent of indian affairs for utah and ex governor brigham young pushed hard for the removal of all indians from the utah portion of the great basin meeting with various indian chiefs at the spanish fork farm in 1864 young told the chiefs if you do not sell your land to the government they will take it whether
