Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; also occur at lower elevations this zone typified by the presence of dense conifer forests and occasional meadows or small lakes has four communities the subalpine fir englemann spruce mountain meadows lodgepole pine and streamside riparian communities the subalpine fir englemann spruce community is prevalent throughout the zone where fires have destroyed this community the lodgepole pine community often replaces it the mountain meadows in general are characterized by carpet like growths of sedges grasses and forbs mountain meadows surrounding lakes and reservoirs also have aquatic emergents emer gents and submergents around the edges of the water the 15 upper provo river reservoirs proposed for modification are gene rally located within areas of the mountain meadow community which are surrounded by the conifer streamside vegetation in the subalpine conifer zone consists of grasses sedges willow shrubs small birch trees small alder trees and conifers c montane conifer aspen zone this zone generally occurs at elevations between 8000 and 9000 feet although some of its vegetative communities also occur at higher or lower elevations communities within this zone although less distinct than those of the higher zones because of considerable intermix ing are the douglas fir lodgepole aspen and streamside riparian communities the douglas fir community is dominant and consists of dense forests of douglas fir and white fir at the higher moister sites at the lower drier sites the dominant conifer species is the ponderosa pine which occurs in open stands in association with various shrub communities the lodgepole pine and aspen communities occur within and surrounding the douglas fir community the streamside riparian com munities muni ties of the upper provo river and the upper diamond fork drainages lie within this zone and consist of narrowleaf narrow leaf cottonwood red river birch alder hawthorn box elder trees willow shrubs and associated grasses forbs and shrubs d submontane foothill shrub zong zone zone the submontane foothill shrub zone extends roughly from the edge of the mountain valleys at elevations between 5000 and 6000 feet to the montane conifer aspen zone at about 8000 feet in addition to foothill areas most of the shrub communities within this zone also occur on the drier and more exposed slopes of the mountain ranges the upper portion of the proposed jordanelle Jor danelle reservoir would be within this zone as would certain portions of the jordan aqueduct and the diamond fork drainage this zone consists largely of intermixtures inter mixtures of four communities the mountain brush oakbrush oak brush sagebrush grass and stream scream side riparian communities the mountain brush community generally occurs on higher moister sites than the other shrub communities its dominant species B 55
