Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; use in each county the annual withdrawal has been steadily increasing over the years especially in utah county since 1970 the total for both counties for 1967 was 183000 acre feet for example compared with 237000 in 1977 annual recharge is estimated at about 138000 acre feet in utah county and 212000 acre feet in salt lake county in confined aquifers water not used from wells contributes to utah lake the jordan river and the great salt lake c municipal and industrial water use in summit and wasatch counties the water supply needed for municipal and domestic use is relatively small because of the limited population and to date has been easily supplied from springs and wells there is no significant industrial water requirement in the two counties at the present time in contrast the salt lake city provo area along the wasatch front uses large quantities of both municipal and industrial water because of the substantial population concentration furthermore the rapid growth of population and economic activity that has occurred in recent years has created an additional demand for new water supplies high quality municipal and industrial water supplies in utah county to date have been satisfied from mountain front and canyon springs supplemented by pumped wells operated during peak demand periods and low runoff years over a period of time more and more of the rela dively tively abundant high quality spring water has been converted from irriga irriza tion to municipal use by exchange the spring water formerly used for irrigation has been traded for deer creek storage water developed under the provo river project to date provo city orem and the other com munities muni ties have been able to meet their requirements through such exchange arrangements and consequently treatment of surface water sources for municipal use has not been necessary in the county total present municipal and industrial use in north utah county is estimated as follows table B 8 present 1977 level high quality municipal and industrial water uses in north utah county average supply acre feet per year municipal and domestic domestic industrially 7 total springs L 221 22000 000 ooo 3000 25000 wells 26 26000 1000 .1000 8000 34000 local streams 0 7000 7000 total 48000 18000 66000 I 1 1 includes geneva steel plant 2 approximately 10000 acre feet of this amount is now diverted to municipal use in exchange for water from deer creek reservoir B 27
