Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; 42 uncompahgre plateau in western colorado in early august unexplored lands lay before them fortunately the expedition pedi tion found two lagunas or utah utes who were visiting one of the uncompahgre lodges on the plateau and persuaded them to guide the expedition west to the lagunas homeland bolton 1972 by the second week of september the two lagunas silvestre and joaquin had guided the expedition to the rim of the uinta basin on september 13 the expedition reached the rio de san buenaventura the green river the expedition avoided the main ford near present day ouray utah and crossed the green river at a ford near jensen utah because the two lagunas were fearful of being captured by mounted indians throughout the rest of their sojourn in the basin basini joaquin and silvestre kept a watchful eye for mounted indians on several occasions escalante noted that the expedition crossed fresh trails of mounted indians noting the basins agricultural potential escalante wrote it has meadows which abound in pasturage and good land for raising crops bolton 1972169 almost one hundred years later another white man john wesley powell echoed similar views but with much more caution in noting the potential of the basin escalante mentioned the expeditions discovery of a very old pueblo where fragments of metates metakes me tates jars and jugs made of clay were scattered about bolton 1972173 from escalantes calantes Es diary it appears that this pueblo was located near the town of myton however attempts to locate the pueblo have been unsuccessful within a week of the rio de san buenaventura crossing the expedition reached the eastern rim of the great basin and entered the homeland of the two guides upon arriving at the shores of utah lake the two fathers spent several days preaching and resting in prep aration for the second leg of their journey the expedi eppedi tion left the valley heading in a southwesterly direction and by early october had reached an area near the present day community of milford here the expedition experienced a heavy early snow and observing that the mountain passes to the west were already filling with snow the decision was made to return to santa fe heading generally in a southeasterly direction the expedition arrived back in familiar territory after several months of near fatal experiences by early january of 1777 the expedition had reached santa fe owing to growing political turmoil in all of new spain dominguez and escalante never were able to return to their new friends on the shores of utah lake never theless theleus th eless word quickly spread of their discoveries
