Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; deep snow and can use a greater variety of browse species for winter forage there are no major elk concentration areas on project feature sites although a few elk summer in the area of the upper provo river reservoirs and a small wintering herd of unknown number has been reported in the west hills area east of the proposed jordanelle Jor danelle reservoir site during severe winters a few elk may also occasionally use the edges of the lands that would receive supplemental irrigation water in the heber francis area bureau of reclamation 1977c 3 moose moose generally do not inhabit a major portion of the project area although moose are occasionally observed in the vicinity of the upper provo river reservoirs where they have become natural immigrants the moose population is expected to increase in this area where suitable habitat exists b predators the major large predators which occur in the mai m&i system area are cougars black bears coyotes and bobcats bob cats cougars and black bears are infrequent inhabitants of the high conifer and aspen communi commini ties such as those associated with the upper provo river reservoirs cougars are also rare winter inhabitants of lower elevation shrub com munities muni ties such as those near the jordanelle danelle Jor reservoir site although coyotes are the most common predators in the project area they are only occasional inhabitants of feature sites bobcats occasionally inhabit the mountainous and foothill communities of the project area including the shrub communities at the jordanelle Jor danelle reservoir site and the montane communities associated with the upper provo river reservoirs c furbearers Fur bearers the furbearers fur bearers which inhabit the mai m&i system area include beaver mink river otter muskrat and pine marten beaver and mink are closely associated with riparian habitats such as watercourses water courses lakes and reservoirs in all vegetative zones below 10 10000 ooo 000 feet in elevation river otter are rare inhabitants of the upper provo river riparian community whereas muskrats occur along the river irrigation canals and ditches pine martens inhabit the coniferous forest of high mountain areas such as those around the upper provo river reservoirs beaver perhaps the most important furbearer forbearer fur bearer in the project area and muskrat generally occur in small numbers along the upper provo river density data indicate the occurrence of about one beaver per river mile and about one muskrat per acre in the riparian habitat in the vicinity of the jordanelle Jor danelle reservoir site mink and river otter are considered rare inhabitants of the upper provo river area and pine marten occasionally inhabit the coniferous forest in the upper provo river reservoir area but no density data are available for these species bureau of reclamation 1977c B 58
