Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; G irreversible AND irretrievable commitment OF RESOURCES renewable and nonrenewable resources would be irreversibly or irretrievably committed by construction and operation of the mai m&i system although it would be theoretically possible to reverse commitments of some of these resources the council on environmental quality has stated that construction and facility uses are basically irrever sible since a large commitment of resources makes removal or non use thereafter unlikely this section briefly describes these commitments 1 construction materials and energy about 19 million cubic yards of permeable and impermeable earth material gravel cobble and riprap would be irretrievably committed for use in dam embankments and associated features much smaller amounts of concrete aggregate would be used imported cement and manu fractured factured materials would be irretrievably com committed mitted bitted to the project features fuels explosives and electrical power would be consumed in construction in addition an average of 19000 megawatt hours of electrical power would be lost annually through the closing of the existing olmsted powerplant Power plant 2 land jordanelle Jor danelle reservoir and other project features adamsite damsite dam site recreation facilities and road relocations would permanently alter use on about 3 3500 500 acres of land currently functioning primarily as wildlife habitat and livestock pasture 3 water resour besour resources c es the mai m&i system would commit about 109 900 acre feet of the high quality natural flows of the provo river to project purposes about 903 90 000 acre feet would go co to municipal and industrial use in the salt lake county and northern utah county areas while 14 14100 100 loo acre feet would go to irrigation in the francis and heber areas another 5 5800 800 acre feet would be lost to evaporation at Jord jordanelie jordanelle Jor anelie danelle reservoir except for high flood flows this water would be replaced to utah lake users by exchange releases from strawberry reservoir and project return flows under present utah water law commitments of water resources would essentially remain permanent provided that they are beneficially used although the areas water resources would not be irretrievably or irre versibly ver sibly committed use of the project water would probably be long term in nature gl G l 1
