Relation | Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; 85 flood plain lies to the west and is composed of recent alluvium the dominant vegetation on the flood plain is salt cedar and cottonwoods cotton woods the elevation is 1433 meters the petroglyph panel occurs on an exfoliated foliated ex sandstone boulder the motifs have been pecked through a red patina on the boulder recognizable motifs include a horse a horse with rider a bison three heads with torso one of which holds a long pipe initials and random lines the pictograph panel occurs on the face of the outcrop and is 800 m to 1000 m north of the petroglyph panel the pictograph has figures in red yellow and black figures include a black horse brands and initials no lithic artifacts were associated with either of these panels the petroglyph panel may have both historic and prehistoric elements while the pictograph panel is probably historic only 42un552 site 42un552 is an open site consisting of three large cobble pavements the site is located in a highly eroded area on the first bench east of the duchesne river flood plain the duchesne river is 900 m to the south west and site 42un551 is 100 m to the east the bench is composed of quaternary gravels overlying uinta formation strata and the flood plain is composed of recent alluvium the dominant vegetation is scattered low bushes the elevation is 1423 meters each of the three cobble pavements has been eroded part of each has slumped into an erosion channel lithic debitage debi tage tobacco tins and tin cans are scattered about the occupation area is 3 m by 20 m the site has an historic component and may have a prehistoric component the age and cultural affiliation of the prehistoric com ponent are unknown 42un557 site 42un557 is an open campsite located on the sheltered south east and southwest sides of a large isolated uinta formation sandstone outcrop the site and the outcrop are immediately north of an unnamed wash on the south side of leland bench at this point leland bench has a very shallow cap of quaternary gravels |
