Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; shale a feasible source of energy production from the two federal oil shale leases in the basin is expected to begin in 1980 the oil shale deposits are part of the extensive reserves underlying northeastern utah and adjacent portions of colorado and wyoming extensive bituminous tarsand aarsand tar sand deposits are contained in asphalt ridge located a few miles southwest of vernal sohlo petroleum company with permission from the utah division of oil and gas conservation plans an open pit mining operation to extract crude oil from these tar sands and expects to be operational by 1980 increases are also expected in the production of phosphate near brush creek north of vernal and gilsonite mined at several points near the project area even though the uinta basin has becmone beccone bec become mone one of the most prominent mineral resourceprovinces resource provinces in north america america66 66 and utahs largest oil producing area67 area 67 the jensen unit area as ofdvly of july 1974 did not contain any of the newly developed oil and gas fields ugo 160 however the unit area does contain one of the older oil producing areas of the basin the ashley creek field which was put into production in 1948 this oil field produces from the pennsylvanian weber sandstone and the permian park city formation the new oil and gas fields trend in a southeasterly direction from the greater altamont bluebell field discovered in the later part of the 1960s northwest of roosevelt utah to the greater red wash field discovered in the early 1950s about eight miles south of jensen utah and east of the green river two gas pipelines traverse the jensen unit south of vernal utah and north of jensen utah the northwest pipeline companys companas Comp anys 26 inch gas line runs north and south along range 23 east in the project area and the utah service 12 inch gasline casline runs east and west along township 4 south salt lake meridian both gas 11 linesconnect lines 99 connect in township 4 south and range 23 east within the unit area 168 no exploratory wells have been drilled within the area of the proposed tyzack reservoir because studies conducted by the bureau of mines in 1968 showed the are area ta t2 to be unfavorable for the entrapment of accumulations of oil and gas 3 if in the future the area should prove to be favorable for the extraction of hydrocarbons by well extraction methods then the space ruling of june 17 1970 by the utfldivision utahdivision Utah Division of oil and gas conservation of one well for each 640 acres acresbb bb would not hamper production from the reservoir area if a well were placed on each bank of the reservoir large reserves of oil shale occur in the green river formation in the uinta basin however this formation does not exist in the areas of proposed construction because it has been removed by erosion bituminous B 5
