Relation | Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; 2 those irrigated lands having a high level of productivity or for the irrigation of new good quality lands where irrigation would stabilize and strengthen existing farm units and communities the bonneville unit irrigation water would all be utilized on good quality land some of the best agricultural a4ricultural land in the entire state the states priority of use of water for this type irrigation is second only to domestic and municipal use there is much to be said from an environmental and recreational point of view for the creation in this arid west of some large bodies of water bear lake utah lake and fish lake each in its own setting constitutes a gem of recreational delight and a joy to behold for those who appreciate the beauty and aesthetic value of large bodies of water in a mountainous setting the creation of such bodies of water by the erection of dams can in considerable measure bring the same result as witness the strawberry reservoir deer creek reservoir and others if the creation of these bodies of water results in the inundation of part of the natural course of some of our streams this may be more than compensated for by the increased opportunity for fishing boating and camping that result from the establishment of a new lake or reservoir the application of irrigation water to previously unwatered land enhances the environment in a number of ways it results in green fields through the summer season where previously they were dry from approximately july 1 in a day when we are concerned about air quality these green fields produce oxygen for the benefit of all animal life witk with with the proper application of water and the resulting plant growth soil is held firmly in place preventing wind erosion and the ravages of flash floods fire hazards are reduced when green plant life replaces the dry vegetation of the summer season where no irrigation takes place it would be extremely short sighted for us to leave our mountain streams to run wild to rush down into the valleys only to stand stagnant producing 244 |
