Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; government to use all practicable means to maintain wherever possible an environment which supports diversity and variety of individual choice the bonneville unit will put into the environment of a million utah citizens many diversities and varieties of individual choices in job opportunities new homes recreational opportunities means to broaden and stabilize the states tax base needed for supporting educational and other public services for an expanding population and other facets of social and economic progress colorado river salinity problem the bureau of reclamation in its draft environmental statement discussed the effects of operation of the bonneville unit on water quality in terms of salinity or concentrations of dissolved solids it is apparent from the studies that have been made that the chemical quality of water within the project will be deteriorated very little at few points and that in some instances the transfer of water will actually lower salinity concentrations cent rations especially in the areas where large numbers of people are involved operation of the unit is expected to increase the average con centration cent ration of dissolved solids in the main stem of the colorado river at lee ferry arizona the division point between the upper and lower basins by about 8 mgl mg1 mgt downstream at lake mead in the lower basin the increase in salinity will be about 11 mgl mg1 mgt according to the bureau of reclamation based upon present modified past flows of the river or 14 mgl mg1 mgt according to the environmental protection agency whose computations were made with out taking into consideration water uses from historic flows of the river that affect present water quality below lake mead the average salinity concentration already amounts to about 760 mgl mg1 mgt which is higher than recommended without treatment for human consumption but well within the limits economically usable for agricultural and most industrial purposes 573
