Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; ADDRESS ONLY THE DIRECTOR BUREAU OF SPORT FISHERIES AND WILDLIFE un united ted states department of the interior FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE BUREAU OF SPORT FISHERIES AND WILDLIFE washington DC 20240 memorandum to commissioner of reclamation 0 ijjtr through assistant secretary for fish and wildlife and parks 1 asist adist fann ftnn J from director bureau of sport fisheries and wildlife subject draft environmental impact statement central utah project your memorandum of august 18 requested our views vie ws on the subject draft we regret the delay in providing these comments we feel that todays enlightened consideration of environmental values demands that todays views reflect those values projects previously planned under prevailing but different policy considerations must be T adjusted to current environmental thinking there is much growing interest in a better bonneville unit as eviden evidenced cec L by the report of the utah natural resources environmental impact evaluation committee which was sent to you by mr gordon harmston on october 17 1972 that report notes that the environmental impact statement does not adequately evaluate the project effects on the environment especially the fish and wildlife resources of particular concern is the loss or reduced quality of about 57 miles of utahs best trout stream this amounts to about 11 percent of the better quality trout stream mileage in utah we believe this comment to be the crux of much of the environmental concern regarding the project our greatest concern is the damaging effects to fish and wildlife resources namely the depletion of mountain trout streams in the uinta basin and the diking of provo bay of utah lake since the definite plan report was prepared in 1964 there have been many changes in the project such as the extension to the sevier river basin and the possible addition of lampton reservoir on the jordan river it is recognized that other modifications may be made in the future among the project modifications or additions that have not been studied in detail by our bureau is the proposed enlargement of the jordanelle danelle Jor reservoir and the attendant revision of operation plans for the provo river system in evaluating this alternative plan we will look at the need for an adequate minimum pool in the larger jordanelle danelle Jor reservoir the added control at jordanelle Jor danelle also should make it possible to thoroughly 528 0019
