Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; spotlight on duchesne river the development of the duchesne river and its tributaries tributa ries has been a challenge to the people of the uinta basin the river is the principal source of water to be developed by the bonneville and upalco units of the central utah project these two units will benefit the duchesne river irrigators irrigatory through new water storage facilities and the bonneville unit will provide additional water to the bonneville basin the following report gives some facts about the physical features of the river some history about its development and the part it plays in the initial phase of the central utah project physical features the duchesne river begins near mirror lake in the uinta mountains at an altitude of more than 11000 feet and terminates more than 90 miles to the southeast in the green river near ouray at an altitude of 4630 feet it drains an area of about 4000 square miles of the uinta basin includi include including ng mountain mesa and desert the chief tributaries tributa ries to the river are rock creek strawberry lake fork and uinta rivers the average annual contribution of the duchesne river to the green river for 24 years of record is about 422800 acre feet once this water gets into the green river very little of it is available for use in utah it is estimated by the US bureau of reclamation that the bonneville unit of the initial phase of the central utah project will diminish this average annual discharge to the green river by about 165900 acre feet historical highlights of water development on october 3 1861 president abraham lincoln issued an executive order establishing an indi indian an reservation in the uinta basin from that time until 1905 the non indian had little interest in the uinta basin in 1905 the federal government opened the reservation to non indian land filings As a result indian and non indian lands are now interspersed throughout much of the uinta basin the first water resource development of consequence took place when early settlers began to divert water for irrigation from the duchesne river and its tributaries tributa ries the first incorporated irrigation company of record on the mainstem mainstern mainster main maln stem stern of the duchesne river is the pioneer canal company incorporated june 27 1906 the number of irrigation companies on the duchesne river and its tributaries tributa ries has grown to more than fifty since that time strawberry valley project in 1905 the congress authorized the construction of the strawberry valley project by the US bureau of reclamation this project on the strawberry river which is the largest tributary of the duchesne was the first bureau of reclamation project in utah the water developed by this project is stored in strawberry reservoir and then delivered through the strawberry tunnel to supplement the irrigation water requirements of south utah county the project was sponsored by the strawberry water users association uintah indian irrigation project in 1906 congress authorized the construction of the uintah indian irrigation project by the bureau of indian affairs its purpose was to provide irrigation facilities for indian land in the uinta basin moon lake project most of the irrigation development for the indians and by the privately owned non indian irrigation companies was completed by the 1930s in 1935 the congress authorized construction of the moon lake project on lake fork river by the bureau of reclamation to provide supplemental irrigation water the project was essentially completed by 1938 and includes moon lake dam and reservoir yellowstone feeder canal midview dam dike and reservoir duchesne feeder canal and midview lateral although this is an irrigation project many people have enjoyed fishing and recreation at moon lake and midview reservoirs the sponsors of this project are nine irrigation companies jointly known as the moon lake water users association provo river project the provo river project was also authorized in 1935 by congress it is sponsored by the provo river water users association and includes the transmountain trans mountain diversion of water from the duchesne river to the provo river through the duchesne tunnel for storage in deer creek reservoir the first water was diverted through the tun
