Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; ground breaking utah valley purification plant A f aj 4j M robert B hilbert along with officials from orem and provo cities initiated the ground breaking of the 10000 utah valley water purification plant in orem recently mr hilbert said jacobensen Jaco bensen construction st company from salt lake city was awarded the contract at the low bid of 9742000 the utah valley water purification plant is designed by the james M montgomery engineers of pasadena california the concept of the utah valley plant is new and should result in large savings both in investment and operation costs for the residents within the treatment plant area its design is such that the environmental benefits are greatly increased over past treatment plant designs this plant will wil wll I 1 be the first of its type in utah and is being developed jointly by the central utah water conservancy district and the james M montgomery consulting engineering firm the purification plant is to be located on the north bench of orem at the mouth of provo canyon the design capacity of the plant will initially process 42 million gallons of water per day the plant also has the capacity to allow expansion to meet future water requirements quire ments it is projected that with the development of the central utah project facilities enough water can be developed to meet the needs of this area through the turn of the century the US bureau of reclamation and the district through additional studies have verified the requirements of water needed to be met from the plant harvey hutchinson district engineer said the first phase of the plant will have a hydraulic capacity of 42 million gallons per day an additional 50 million gallons of hydraulic water per day will be available the design will include provisions and facilities to permit the capacity of the plant to increase to 100.000000 100000000 gallons per day presently the districts construction schedule completion date is projected to deliver water in 1979 nations largest powerplant Power plant consumes no fuel while most of america shivers in a cold induced energy crisis the nations largest powerplant power plant complex is generating enough electricity to heat and light the homes of eight million people without burning a drop of oil a pound of coal or a cubic foot of natural gas that powerplant power plant complex is at the bureau of reclamations grand coulee dam on the columbia river near spokane wash last year it produced a record 22.7 227 227 billion kilowatt hours of non polluting hydroelectric energy from a renewable resource water fal fai falling ling through turbine generators in the left and right sides of the main dam a pumping generating plant and the nearly completed third powerplant Power plant although power production may be affected this year by drought conditions in the west grand coulees coultes Cou lees presently installed capacity of nearly 4.2 42 42 million kilowatts still makes it the largest single powerplant power plant complex of any type in the united states it exceeds the tennessee valley authoritys Author itys browns ferry nuclear plant in alabama and the detroit edison companys companas Comp anys monroe coal fired steam electric plant in michigan both of which have a rated capacity of about 3.3 33 33 million kilowatts grand coulee is also the third largest hydroelectric complex in the world ranking behind the 6 million kilowatt krasnoyarsk dam and the 4.5 45 45 million kilowatt bratsk dam both in the soviet union it will regain its former title as the worlds largest hydro complex if all of the presently planned 9 million kilowatts of capacity are installed the third powerplant Power plant at grand coulee which has been under construction since the late 1960s houses three of the worlds biggest hydroelectric generators the first of those three generators each rated at 600000 kilowatts was placed in service in september 1975 followed by a second unit in april 1976 and a third last december those three new generators helped push grand coulees coultes Cou lees energy production to a record 22.7 227 227 billion kilowatt hours in 1976 compared to 17 billion kilo watt hours of energy produced in 1975 three more generators rated at an even larger capacity 700.000 700000 kilowatts each will be installed and operating in the third powerplant Power plant by 1978 the bureau of reclamation is also studying the possibility of installing additional generators totaling 2.4 24 24 million kilowatts which would bring grand coulees coultes Cou lees ultimate capacity to nearly 9 million kilowatts
