Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; N 4 strawberry complex the many travelers going east on US highway 40 as well as the fisherman have undoubtedly noticed the construction going on near strawberry reservoir this is the beginning of the 90 million dollar strawberry complex of the bonneville unit of the central utah project at the present time construction is being completed to accommodate the mechanical mole which will start drilling a tunnel through the mountain to bring in water from the uinta mountain range the first tunnel to be drilled is the water hollow tunnel it will be over 4 miles long with a drilled diameter of over 12 feet 6 inchs incas the completed diameter will be 10 feet 6 inches the water to be delivered to the strawberry reservoir from this aqueduct will require increasing the capacity of strawberry reservoir three times upon completion of water hollow tunnel the district can then meet its commitment to deliver water to salt lake county by 1972 to satisfy the countys countes coun tys increasing municipal and industrial requirements the important features of this complex are two new reservoirs the upper stillwater reservoir and the currant creek reservoir as well as aqueducts and tunnels to bring water from the uinta mountain range to strawberry reservoir from strawberry reservoir water will be delivered to the rapidly expanding areas of the wasatch front in salt lake and utah counties for municipal and industrial uses for supplemental irrigation in utah and juab counties the sevier river basin and to generate power strawberry aqueduct will head at upper stillwater reservoir on rock creek the aqueduct will intercept the flows of rock creek and seven other streams as it crosses the high southern flank of the uinta mountains because of the rough terrain cutting head of mechanical mole is lowered into place by large crane prior to the start of drilling of 4 mile long water hollow tunnel tunnel or pipe sections will be used throughout the e entire 37 mile length both up upper p er stillwater and currant creek reservoirs will serve as equalizing reservoirs reservoirs along the strawberry aqueduct the upper stillwater reservoir will regulate the flows of rock creek and the south fork of rock creek for release to the aqueduct it will have a total capa capacity city of 29500 acre feet this dam will be located approximately 31 airline miles northwest of duchesne and will be 188 feet high currant creek reservoir will divert water from currant creek and five of its tributaries tributa ries into the aqueduct it will have a total capacity of 15000 acre feet with only 1000 feet of active storage since this reservoir will be used as an equalizing reservoir to supply strawberry reservoir with a consistent supply of water the dam will rise 130 feet and have a crest length of 1465 feet water level fluctuations at the currant creek reservoir will be small making it an ideal fishing and recreational area the existing strawberry reservoir will be enlarged from its present capacity of 283000 acre feet to a total of 870000 acre feet this will include 700000 acre feet of active capacity and 170000 of inactive capacity A land area of 15700 acres will be inundated by the reservoir it is proposed that within two years work will be starting on the strawberry reservoir enlargement A new dam will be constructed to provide the enlargement lar gement it will be called the soldier creek dam it will be located about 7 miles downstream from the existing strawberry dam which it will replace strawberry complex UPPER stillwater R ES strawberry AQUEDUCT A ann 7nn t STL stillwater WATER sater TUNNEL TU EL RHODES TUNNEL ADES TUNNEL A T LVAT L VAT TU TUNNEL E L 01 & 14 CURRANT CREEK 7 currant RES starvation complex TUNNEL 1 WATER HOLLOW KNIGHT LAYOUT TUNNEL IV oam DAM TLINNE starvation FEEDER HWY 40 CONOU condu IT relocation starvation RES kar nar I 1 vf DUCHESNE khay khwy 40 relocation strawberry RES ENLA RGEMENT
