Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; CUWCD newsletter lorin allred alfred aifred ailred wasatch county commission chairman also attending were state and local officials county commissioners mayors church civic and business leaders water district officials representatives of torono america who are constructing stage I 1 of the dam and the general public the utah national guard posted the colors the invocation was offered by reverend patrick F carley pastor of the st marys of the assumption parish park city utah and the benediction was given by elder vaughn J featherstone a member of the first quorum of the seventy of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints nearly 25 years in planning the dam will rise 296 feet above streambed stream bed and will have a crest length of 3.600 3600 feet and a crest width of 40 feet the volume of materials will be approximately 14.5 145 million cubic feet the dam is being built in two stages stage 1 from now to summer of 1989 includes excavation of the dam foundation stripping of the abutments and stockpiling of materials the contract for stage 1 was awarded june 12 1987 to torono america inc of san francisco stage 2 from fall 1989 to spring 1992 includes the bulk of the dam construction the relocation of US highway 40 and 189 and the construction of a new wasatch county road will take place concurrently with the dam construction during the 5 year construction period the project will generate about 5000 man years of work or employment for about 1200 people in any given year during the peak years from 1989 to 1990 the project will provide a dependable supply of municipal and industrial water 70000 acre feif fepf fe to salt lake county and 19000 acre feet to utah county and 2400 to wasatch county one acre foot will meet the yearly water needs of a family of five summit and wasatch counties will receive 15100 acre feet of supplemental irrigation water storage rights will be reserved for provo city additionally the project will provide flood control to help minimize adverseflooding adverse flooding onthe anthe on the lower provo river and utah lake recreation for 5000 people at one time will be provided by the two main recreation areas along the 28 mile shoreline accommodations will include 160 picnic units more than 200 camping units single and group complete with utilities restrooms and showers a 10 lolane lane boat ramp a marina fish cleaning stations and car and trailer parking areas the final design of the dam will accommodate the potential for hydropower hydro power production efforts are being made to find a nonfederal entity to develop hydro power at the damsite adamsite dam site house panel OKs 120 million for CUP washington the house appropriations committee voted to spend 120 million on the central utah project in the fiscal year that begins oct 1 the figure was 145 14.5 145 million under the 134.5 1345 the reagan administration requested for CUP in its budget message the 120 million figure was not a surprise to utah members of congress who had feared a sharper cut because of the federal deficit and the constraints stra ints of the budget resolution overall the committee increased bureau of reclamation spending above the administrations request while trimming army corps of engineers spending sen jake garn R utah who serves on the senate appropriations committee said he would attempt to restore the house cut when the bill reaches the senate utahns utahna are hoping to get funding to the 124 million level that would keep the bonneville unit on a 1995 completion schedule the house committee made a far sharper cut in the appropriation request for the little dell project in salt lake county trimming it from 5 million to 175 1.75 175 million little dellis dell deli deil is funded under the army corps of engineers while CUP is a department of interior function other utah items in the bill included 124000 for work in the weber basin 277000 for safety work at the newton dam 49000 at the moon lake project 1074 1.074 1074 million at strawberry valley 100000 in design work on the uintah project 100000 at the jensen project and 32 3.2 32 million in fish and wildlife and recreation facilities the committee voted no money for an endangered fish recovery project on the upper colorado river in utah colorado and wyoming saying it was sent up too late to be included in the bill but in its report said it would consider funding after the three states and the secretary of the interior sign a cooperative agreement
